RESEARCHERS

Joana LourençoPhD

Joana has a First degree in Biology from the University of Évora. She received her PhD degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Aveiro. Her current research interests are in uranium mining wastes and the contribution of in vitro tests for the elucidation of the molecular responses to metals and uranium daughter radionuclides toxicity.

Tânia Caetano, PhD

Assistant Researcher, DBio and CESAM

E-mail: tcaetano@ua.pt

Tânia received a First degree in Biology and a PhD in Biology from the University of Aveiro. Her current research interests are the biosynthesis of lanthipeptides in bacteria and haloarchaea. More particularly, she is interested in the evolution of the gene clusters, the functionality/specificity of the proteins and the mode of action of the peptides. Additionally, she is interested in the determinants conferring resistance to these compounds and also to conventional antibiotics.

PHD STUDENTS

Cátia Santos, MSc

Cátia has a first degree in Biology and MSc in Microbiology from the University of Aveiro. Her current research interests are in the prevalence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance determinants within a hospital environment.

Cláudia Covas, MSc

Cláudia received a First degree in Biology and Genetic from UFRJ-Brazil and a MSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology from FIOCRUZ-Brazil. Her current research interests are in the search for new naturally produced antibacterial peptides produced by bacteria from unusual/extreme environments.

Diana Dias, MSc

PhD student

E-mail: dianadias@ua.pt

Diana received a First degree in Biology and Geology and a MSc in Microbiology from the University of Aveiro. Her current research work is focused on wild mammals in Portugal, and how their enteric flora can be a source of pathogenic bacteria and resistance to antibiotics. Within the pathogens, studying some zoonoses-causing agents such as STEC (shiga toxin-producing E. coli) and Salmonella spp., which are among the most reported zoonoses in Europe.
